Teaching people to read, write, and speak
the English language.

The executive board has decided to close WALC for at least three weeks beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, out of deep concern for the health and well-being of all of us.  Many of our tutors fall under the “vulnerable” category and we also have to consider that the work we do puts us in close proximity to each other and our students. Although we all recognize that our work is important, it is not essential during this health situation. All activities including tutoring and Soup and a Good Book will be postponed as it presents a high risk of spreading the virus. In two weeks, the executive board will determine a re-opening date. Please feel free to e-mail us if you have any further questions or concerns. Or you can text us at:
(562) 409.5365.
(Update: Closed at least until May. Further updates will be added)

The Whittier Area Literacy Council is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to teaching people to read, write and speak the English Language (for free).  WALC has served Whittier and adjacent communities since 1962.

To fulfill our mission, WALC trains community volunteers and pairs them with students.  We use a variety of methods and materials to meet the learning goals of our students.  We partner with other non-profits and with city agencies.  WALC is funded by grants, personal donations, the City of Whittier, fundraisers, membership dues and local service organizations.  Board meetings are held on the first Saturday of every month.
